Solo D&D

Play D&D solo, with an AI Dungeon Master

No group, no scheduling, no prep. Make a character, pick an adventure and the AI DM runs the game for you: scenes, NPCs, checks, dice and your character sheet, all in one place.

Free plan with 30 credits every month. Runs in your browser.

Ways to play D&D solo

Solo play has been around for a long time. Each way has its own trade-off.

Solo adventures and gamebooks

Written adventures where you pick numbered choices. Easy to start, but you can only do what the author wrote.

GM emulators and oracle tables

You ask yes/no questions and roll on tables to decide what happens. Very flexible, but you are the DM and the player at the same time.

Journaling games

Prompts guide you as you write your character’s story. Great for reflection, light on rules and combat.

An AI Dungeon Master

You describe what you do and the AI DM answers like a person running the table: it narrates, plays NPCs, asks for checks and keeps the sheet up to date.

Why an AI DM works for solo play

It reacts to anything you try

There is no list of choices. Talk your way past the guard, climb the wall or burn the bridge; the story follows what you actually did.

You never do the bookkeeping

HP, XP, inventory and spells update as you play, so you can stay in your character instead of managing paperwork.

Play in short bursts

A few turns on the bus or a whole evening. Your adventure is saved and stays in sync on your phone, tablet and computer.

It still feels like a table

Background music changes with the scene, and the Scene Visualizer can draw a character, place or moment from your story.

Your first solo session

  1. 1

    Make a character

Pick a ready-made template or build your own hero.

  2. 2

    Choose an adventure

Start a ready-to-run adventure in fantasy, sci-fi, horror, survival, superhero or history.

  3. 3

    Say what you do

Write your action. The AI DM narrates the result and asks for a roll when it matters.

  4. 4

    Stop any time

Close the tab and continue later from where you left off, on any device.

5e-compatible, so your rules knowledge carries over

MacerAI plays by D&D 5e-compatible rules from the System Reference Document 5.1: ability scores, skill checks, HP and XP work the way you expect. New to D&D? You don’t have to learn the rules first; the AI DM decides when a roll is needed.

A free rule checker answers rules questions while you play. MacerAI is independent and not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.

Tips for a better solo game

Give your character a reason

A goal, a debt or a secret gives the AI DM something to build on and makes your choices matter more.

Write actions, not summaries

"I hold the torch up and read the inscription" works better than "I explore the room". Specific actions get specific answers.

Talk to the NPCs

Ask questions, bargain, lie. NPCs are where solo play gets its surprises.

Take risks

Failed rolls move the story too. Some of the best scenes start with a bad roll.

Solo D&D: questions

Can you play D&D alone?

Yes. You can use solo adventures, GM emulators or journaling games, or play with an AI Dungeon Master. With MacerAI the AI DM runs the game, so you only play your character.

Is MacerAI real D&D?

MacerAI uses D&D 5e-compatible rules from the System Reference Document 5.1, so checks, ability scores and character sheets will feel familiar. It is an independent game with its own adventures, not an official D&D product.

Is solo play free?

Yes. The free Adventurer plan gives you 30 credits every month. Each AI DM story turn uses credits. Paid plans add more credits and stronger AI models.

Do I need to know the rules to play solo?

No. Describe what your character does in plain words. The AI DM decides when a roll is needed and applies the result.

How long is a solo session?

As long as you like. You can play a few turns or a whole evening; your adventure is saved and you can continue later from any device.

Can friends join my solo adventure later?

Yes. Send them an invite link from the game and they join for free. The host’s credits pay for the party’s story turns.

Which settings can I play solo?

Fantasy, sci-fi, horror, survival, superhero and history adventures are available, all playable alone.
